Henderson County Wreck on I-26

A tanker truck carrying sulfuric acid crashed and caught fire last night in Henderson County.  Interstate 26 is still shut down in both directions near mile marker 54 near East Flat Rock.

The driver, Allan Thomas Vandamme of Ontario, Canada, was able to crawl out before the tanker went up in flames and began leaking sulfuric acid.  He was taken to Mission Hospital with unknown injuries.  No one else was injured.

Residents within a mile radius of the crash were evacuated, but this morning they were allowed to return home.

The Highway Patrol is still investigating the cause of the wreck.  Causes of the crash may include mechanical failure or speed.  Charges are pending.

Road crews and hazardous materials teams are working to repair the damage and clean up the sulfuric acid.
